Can You Convert a CZ 457 to Another Caliber? Everything You Need to Know

One of the biggest advantages of the CZ 457 platform is its ability to switch between calibers.

If you already own a CZ 457 in .22 LR, .22 WMR, or .17 HMR, you don't need to buy another rifle to shoot a different cartridge. With the right parts, you can convert your existing rifle to another caliber while keeping the same action, trigger, stock, and optic.

Before ordering parts for my own rifle, I spent quite a bit of time researching what was required and which components were actually compatible. Here's what I learned.

Can You Convert a CZ 457?

Yes.

The CZ 457 was designed with interchangeable barrels, allowing owners to switch between .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .17 HMR.

Rather than purchasing a second rifle, you can install a different barrel and magazine, giving you the ability to switch between calibers for a fraction of the cost of buying another CZ 457.

For me, converting my .22 WMR to .22 LR made more sense than buying another rifle. I wanted an accurate .22 LR to compare against my Henry while still keeping my CZ primarily as a .22 WMR. Whenever I want to shoot .22 LR, I can swap the barrel and magazine.

What Parts Do You Need?

The conversion is surprisingly simple.

You'll need:

• A CZ 457 barrel in your desired caliber
• A magazine for that caliber
• A magazine spacer (if converting to .22 LR)
• T25 Torx bit or screwdriver
• 3mm hex bit or Allen key

Factory take-off barrels are fairly easy to find on the used market, often in like-new condition, since many owners upgrade or modify their CZ 457 rifles.

The .22 WMR and .17 HMR use the same magazine because the cartridges share similar overall dimensions. The shorter .22 LR requires its own magazine.

If you're converting from .22 WMR or .17 HMR to .22 LR, you'll also need the magazine spacer. This allows the shorter .22 LR magazine to fit correctly in the rifle. The spacer is inexpensive, but it can be difficult to find because it's frequently on backorder.

If you're converting from .22 LR to either .22 WMR or .17 HMR, the spacer needs to be removed.

Understanding Barrel Compatibility

This is the most important part of the conversion.

The receiver is the same across the CZ 457 lineup. The important difference isn't the action—it's the barrel profile.

CZ 457 rifles use one of two barrel profiles.

Standard Sporter Barrel

These barrels fit the standard hunting stocks.

Examples include:

• American
• Synthetic
• Premium
• Stainless
• Jaguar
• Lux
• Royal
• Training Rifle

Heavy Barrel

These barrels use a much larger contour.

Examples include:

• Varmint
• Varmint MTR
• Long Range Precision (LRP)

Although heavy barrels fit the same receiver, they generally require a stock with a wider barrel channel.

For example, my rifle is a CZ 457 American, and I purchased a .22 LR barrel from a CZ 457 Synthetic. Since both rifles use the standard sporter barrel profile, the barrel fits perfectly in my American stock without any modifications.

If I had purchased a Varmint barrel instead, it would have fit the receiver, but it would not have fit my stock without either modifying the barrel channel or replacing the stock entirely.

Before ordering parts, always confirm both the caliber and the barrel profile of the rifle you're buying parts from.

One Last Important Thing to Know

When you convert your CZ 457 to another caliber, you may also be changing barrel length, and each caliber has different trajectory.

So even though you're using the same scope, you should expect to sight the rifle in again after the conversion.

The process only takes a few minutes, but it's an important step to remember whenever you swap barrels.

Why I Chose to Convert Instead of Buying Another Rifle

I briefly considered buying a dedicated .22 LR rifle.

For me, the conversion made much more sense.

I get to keep the same trigger, stock, and scope that I'm already familiar with while adding another caliber to the same platform. Although changing calibers takes a little extra effort, it costs considerably less than purchasing another CZ 457.

For the type of shooting I do, it was the obvious choice.
