Shopping for a Gun Safe: What I’m Looking for and Why
When I purchased my new CZ 457, I thought I had everything covered.
But I missed one thing — my gun safe was already full.
Right now I’m using a Stack-On 8 gun safe. It’s basic, but it does the job. I don’t need anything fancy — just something that keeps things secure and organized.
The problem is, I now have 9 rifles.
The Reality of “8 Gun” Safes
My 8 gun safe is barely an 8 gun safe.
At least it became that way once I started adding scopes and slings
Five of my rifles are scoped. That leaves them leaning against each other and difficult to remove or put back in.
My current setup is an over-capacity 8 gun safe, with an SKS moved to a locked gun case.
It works for now, but it’s not a long-term setup.

Why It Matters
With four young kids in the house, having a safe isn’t optional.
That’s the main reason.
But beyond that, I also want something that actually works.
- easy to access
- not crammed together
- organized enough that I'm not moving other rifles to get one in or out
What I’m Actually Looking For
I’m not looking for a massive, heavy-duty safe.
There are a lot of nice options out there, but I’ll keep it basic and spend the extra on ammo.
I’m just looking for something that:
- fits more than I currently have
- gives me room to grow
- actually fits scoped rifles comfortably
Realistically, I’m looking in the 18–24 gun range.
That should give me enough room to comfortably store what I have, and maybe use it for ammo until it gets displaced by more rifles.
Constraints
I’m working within a few limits.
I need to keep the safe under 26 inches wide, which narrows things down but still keeps me in the 18–24 gun range.
Budget is another.
I’d like to stay in the $300–400 range if I can find something used. I’m not in a rush, so I’ll keep an eye on the local market.
If nothing comes up and I need to buy new, I’ll likely end up between $400–600.
Features (Simple, Not Fancy)
I’m not picky here.
A keypad would be nice, but a simple key lock is fine too.
I’m more than happy to spend up for quality when it comes to what goes inside the gun safe. The safe itself just isn’t as high of a priority for me.
Where I’m At Right Now
For now, my current setup works fine.

It’s not ideal, but it’s good enough that I won't rush into anything.
I’d rather take my time and see what comes up locally.
Closing
Just like ammo storage, this comes down to having a setup that actually works.
Not something overbuilt or overcomplicated — just something that fits what I have, with room to grow.
